We went digging through 10 years of our own channel data expecting to find that our biggest year was always our best year. Turns out that's not true.

2021 was our all-time viewership peak — the year the channel scaled up the most, in raw numbers, than any before or since. If you'd asked us "what was our best year," most of us would've pointed straight at 2021 without checking anything.

But when we looked past total views and asked a different question — not "how many people watched," but "how many people watched and then actually stuck around" — the answer flipped. 2025, on noticeably less total watch time than 2021, is quietly converting new viewers into real regulars at a rate we've never hit before.

Why that's the more interesting number

Anyone can chase views. A view that never comes back isn't really a fan — it's a stranger who happened to click once. What actually builds a channel is the second visit. By that measure, something about what we've been doing lately is working better than the scale-first years ever did, even though it doesn't show up if all you're looking at is the view counter.

We genuinely don't have one clean answer for why

Could be better hooks. Could be the shows we've been picking. Could be that the people already here are bringing more people with them. Probably some mix of all three — and honestly, figuring that out properly is a big part of why we built this whole data project in the first place.

What it means going forward

We're not chasing 2021-style raw numbers just because they look bigger on paper. If a smaller, more engaged year is quietly outperforming our biggest year at the thing that actually matters — turning viewers into couch regulars — that's the number we're building toward, not the other one.

--- Note for RJ: this topic is genuinely more "insider data" than "fan entertainment" — even softened, it reads better as Patreon-exclusive behind-the-scenes content (where "here's real data about how the channel is actually growing" is a strong insider-access hook) than as a public SEO article. Recommend routing this one to Patreon instead of the public site; happy to draft a separate, purely fun public piece to fill that slot instead.
